10 Brightening Ideas Of Tooth Stains
Tooth stains are a common problem for now. Coffee, tea, colas, smoke, acidic juices certain medicines and highly pigmented foods can take their dingy toll on tooth enamel. In addition, not all the teeth were meant to be white. The natural color of teeth is actually pale yellow to pale yellowy red. But as you age your teeth tend to be darker.
Over time, surface enamel cracks and erodes, exposing dentine. This is the less dense interior of the tooth, which absorbs color from food. Tooth stains also latch onto plaque and tartar that builds upon and between our teeth. Many things may lead to staining of teeth, which includes antibiotics, quirks in individual metabolism and even high fever. The more yellow will be your tooth stains, the easier it will be to remove them. Deep brown stains, which are due to long-term use of the antibiotic tetracycline, can be very difficult to erase.
But some of the common tooth stains – the coffee and cigarette variety – can often be washed away between visits to the dental hygienist.
1. Brush after every meal: –
If you clean your teeth regularly then stains are less likely to remain on your teeth.
2. Scrub gently: –
Just as abrasive products can scrub away enamel work surfaces, over-aggressive brushing can rub off tooth enamel, exposing the deeper-colored dentine, which could make your teeth look even duller.
3. Polish with baking soda: –
Mix baking soda with enough hydrogen peroxide mouthwash (available from pharmacies) to make a mixture to the consistency of a toothpaste, then brush stains away. Follow with a rinse using hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, which you should dilute according to instructions on the label.
4. Use a discloser: –
Rinse your mouth well with disclosing solution from your dentist. The colored areas show where a plaque still clings to your teeth after brushing. These spots are where your teeth will stain if you don’t improve your brushing technique.
5. Rinse often: –
Likewise, after every meal, rinse the food from your teeth and if you are not able to go to the bathroom, take a swig from your water glass, rinse and swallow at the table itself.
6. Switch to an electric toothbrush: –
They seem to be much better at motivating reluctant brushes to clean their teeth more often than manual toothbrushes. But when it comes to removal of plaque, this depends more on the quality of your brushing than the type of toothbrush you use.
7. Choose an antibacterial mouthwash: –
Whereas all mouthwashes are fine for rinsing, but mouthwashes that have an antibacterial action such as Corsodyl or Cholrohex, will reduce stain-catching plaque.
8. Use a whitening toothpaste or tooth polish: –
Dentists used to warn patients away from over-the-counter whitening products because they contained gritty abrasives that could erode the tooth enamel. But manufacturers have got better at using peroxide instead of abrasives to give you a slightly brighter after-brushing effect. But never expect miracles as the peroxides in toothpaste or polishes only stay on the tooth surface for a brief period, so you will receive only a bit of lightning.
9. Try a whitening system: –
Pharmacies used to sell a product called Brilliant Whitening System, in which a gel is applied to the teeth by using a gum shield left in place for five to ten minutes. This keeps the bleaching agent on the teeth a bit longer in comparison to a tooth polish and may get them a bit whiter. Regular use could lighten your teeth by two or three shades, compared to the eight to ten shades of lightning you can get from a cosmetic dental lightening treatment.
10. Do it all in one visit: –
If you are impatient, your dentist can even bleach your teeth by the help of surgery using concentrated carbamide peroxide solution and a special light that powers the material into the dentine.
